BYK-Chemie, Wesel
The comprehensive revitalization and redesign of an old warehouse in Wesel shows how an empty industrial building can become modern working environments: Since the end of 2019, the IT department of BYK-Chemie, a division of the ALTANA Group, has been located there.
When moving from traditional cubicle offices into an open multispace, comprehensive change management is the basis for successful collaboration in the new work environment. That is why our process began even before the actual planning and design of modern working environments. In various workshops with management on the one hand and employees on the other hand, a joint work culture was defined. It quickly became clear that the new cooperation should also be spatially tangible. That is why, for example, we deliberately placed the tea kitchen, an important meeting place, at the main entrance, where it is directly visible to visitors — the focus is on employees!

Because BYK-Chemie is all about chemical, liquid additives (additives) for refining product surfaces, the theme of “flow” was the guiding idea of our design concept for the IT experts' new home: flowing forms, structures and levels that overlap — when you enter the lobby, you have the feeling that everything is in motion and connected with each other. And that is exactly what Multispace is designed for: Employees should move through their work environment and always sit where they can best complete their task — in open spaces, in conference rooms or telephone boxes. That is activity-based working.

A grid structure makes it possible for zones in multispace not to be created by walls, but by flexible elements such as boxes, which can be adapted to different work situations at any time. Retreat areas are usually designed as indentations and create a direct connection to the surrounding nature, also thanks to generous windows. This is reinforced by various shades of green in the oases of peace, which harmonize perfectly with the blue that runs through the entire building. Like the curves, which can be found in many room elements, it was taken from the company logo and is part of a holistic corporate design.
