Competition entry for Kreissparkasse Herzogtum-Lauenburg
In the North, showing a “clear edge” is not just a platitude, but a motto of life. The Kreissparkasse Herzogtum-Lauenburg is also taking up this attitude with its corporate philosophy. In line with this, our competition entry for the new Kreissparkasse building is based on a building with a clear form and structure. This functional character would make it harmonize with the adjacent industrial park and fit seamlessly into the local identity. In order to express modernity and departure, our building concept should reinterpret the typical industrial façade: Based on a strict grid that would play with different materials and transparencies, an inviting and lively effect could be created. This impression was also reinforced by the large glass fronts on the ground floor, which allowed a view of the surrounding green areas.
The entrances to the building would be on the south-eastern side and would therefore offer short distances to the neighboring aftercare services. Above the entrances, the upper floor could extend slightly and thus form a protected zone for stopping and drinking coffee in front of the bakery. The overhang should also serve as sun protection for the glazed façade on the ground floor. The easy-care metal façade of the upper floors would create a connection to the city center and the entire region thanks to its distinctive color scheme. As a result, our competition entry could take on the role of an attractive anchor building at the entrance to the commercial and shopping district.

The ground floor with the Kreissparkasse branch would be transparent and inviting at the new location and would thus create a center of attraction with its highly visible “house within a house”. Here, the self-service zone, customer hall and brief consultation areas could be combined. The large set shelf with self-service devices, access to the dialog box and locker system could not only include all functions of the Kreissparkasse, but also a vending machine with regional products and the neighboring bakery counter. This would strengthen the local connection and meeting place character for customers. With HSW systems, the self-service area could be separated from the customer hall and the adjacent bakery and would therefore be accessible 24 hours a day.
To welcome visitors, the “house within a house” would be designed like a residential building: You would enter the corridor and greet you directly by the floor manager. The adjoining kitchen and waiting area, which would radiate the comfort of a living room, would provide the best atmosphere for brief advice or exchange among employees. For longer consultations, however, the adjacent dining room with a real estate wall could be suitable. After crossing the abandoned house, you would finally reach the branch's consulting and meeting area. The interior rooms were primarily used for consultation; the rooms on the façade could be used flexibly for advice, meetings or work.
Thermal insulation and energy efficiency played a central role in our competition submission for the new Kreissparkasse building. Thanks to compact and airtight construction, passive solar use and efficient home technology, heating requirements could be massively reduced. Thanks to the photovoltaic system on the roof, the good solar radiation at the location would be used sensibly as a contribution to the energy concept. To improve the microclimate, the building could also have a green roof. This would result in a lower ambient temperature due to water evaporation and improve the performance of the photovoltaic system.

With the space-efficient multiple use of areas, the competition entry would enable intensive and therefore particularly sustainable use on a small area. As part of a distinctive material ecology, only building materials that are harmless to health should be used. In addition, there would be high-quality recycled materials and wood, which had to be made as a result of necessary forestry decisions. This would serve to protect construction participants, employees and customers and ensure the value of the property is retained. Life cycle analyses (LCA) could also minimize CO2 emissions and the impact on the environment.
