The economic success of a hospital depends decisively on factors such as constant capacity utilization, profitable treatments and motivated specialists. But even with this knowledge, the situation of clinics in Germany is currently continuing to deteriorate. The pandemic and energy crisis have put clinics under massive pressure. The Shortage of skilled workers It takes its course unhindered. Stations must be closed in part because receiving them is no longer profitable. Fewer wards in turn mean fewer patients and therefore fewer case numbers and revenue. A vicious circle that is driving many clinics into the red.
Patient satisfaction in hospitals is an important factor for clinics to become profitable again. Because the more satisfied patients are with the quality of care, service and appearance of a clinic, the more likely they are to recommend it to others. This gradually creates a firm, sustainable foothold in the municipality as a regional care provider and first point of contact for health services.
But how can healthcare institutions achieve these goals? We present three decisive measures for patient acquisition in hospitals:
Nowadays, patients almost exclusively go to hospital if their health does not allow any alternatives. In the “hospital apparatus,” he has to embark on an externally determined daily care routine with care tours, blood samples, rigid meal times and waiting for visits or examinations. There is no room for personal feelings, well-being and self-determination. It is obvious that people find this process restrictive or extremely unpleasant. Hospitals should therefore fundamentally ask how patients feel and what they want.
In this context, “hospitality” is of crucial importance. The technical term from the hospitality industry refers to infrastructural and personal services. For clinics, this means that they should include patients' well-being in all planning steps. There are effective options for this, particularly in the area of hospital architecture: The hospital can become a place of retreat where patients can relax and return to everyday life with renewed strength.
How can clinics actually become a place of retreat? With its positive effect on the psyche, the concept offers Healing Architecture Hospitals have great potential. Here, people and their needs are placed at the center of architecture. Flexible room solutions ensure that patients have an intimate and safe retreat where they can relax: They allow relatives to visit undisturbed and create the desired privacy without disturbing other patients or professionals. A clearly functionally structured ward ensures that relatives can orient themselves well and that there is enough space for targeted discussions with specialists. Healing Architecture, however, goes beyond structuring hospital spaces. studies revealed that, for example, just looking at the countryside provides relaxation and thus a reduction in painkillers, fewer complications and a shorter length of stay. In essence, it is about positively influencing the interaction between space and psyche. This turns the statement “I have to go to the clinic” into “I want to go to this clinic because I feel in good hands here.”
In times of digitization, however, it is no longer enough “just” to create excellent healthcare services and a hospitable atmosphere for patients. Patients must also communicate the positive hospital experience to the outside world via appropriate evaluation portals. A professional “check out” when leaving the hospital with a query helps to obtain evaluations and improve your own services at the same time.
In addition, clinics in the region can establish their roots more firmly and integrate themselves into community life through simple measures. Attractive restaurants or cafés within the clinic can already contribute to this. An offer of information events or charitable activities in the municipality can also act as attractions and increase awareness.
