The shortage of skilled workers in Germany is noticeable in all sectors. As a countermeasure, New Work is the key to increasing employer attractiveness. This results in: employee retention, greater employee identification with the company and overall greater job satisfaction. New Work measures are also relevant for healthcare. However, many are still at the very beginning of a new working world focused on employees and are struggling with a shortage of skilled workers as a result. This is also proven studies, which assume 1.8 million vacant jobs in 2035. It is therefore worth taking a look at the trend New Work to throw, which has already arrived at many other companies.
New Work focuses on employees and addresses the question: “What work do we want to do and how? ”. This creates a new understanding of work. Employees organize themselves as individuals and collectives. This leads to significant advantages, as experts point out: “An action is self-determined when the actor identifies himself with the essential elements from which it originates; it is forced when the agent dissociates himself from the essential elements that produce or induce the action.” (Bergmann, 2005). Self-determined action ensures identification and satisfaction.
New Work therefore means more self-determination over working hours, place of work, work content, scope of work, duration of work and work partners. Conversely, this means democratizing leadership. Management tasks are not only carried out at senior level, but are carried out collectively by all employees. This improves organization and leadership as well as professional self-image and recognition — i.e. those areas that nurses say surveys are particularly important.
According to Patrick Merke, there are 14 essential elements of New Work culture, which he referred to in his book”New Work in Healthcare — The new and different work culture in healthcare“(2022) is received.
The concept of”Magnet hospitals“from the USA shows the astonishing success of New Work. In the 1980s, the shortage of skilled workers in the USA was as devastating as the situation in Germany today.
However, it was noticeable that some hospitals had fewer problems retaining their staff or attracting new ones. They were characterized by an academization of the nursing profession, flat hierarchies, interprofessional teams, more decision-making powers and a high level of self-fulfillment. These hospitals not only attracted specialists magnetically, but were also extremely popular with patients, as the satisfied employees also achieved excellent quality of care.
These approaches are also taken up and implemented through New Work.
20 European acute care hospitals are now also taking part in the study”Magnet4Europe“part. A pilot project by Waldkliniken in Eisenberg is taking the concept further and taking up additional success factors from New Work: Here, a new hospital architecture was created as a holistic approach for New Work in healthcare. Because the right environment promotes new thinking and leadership. In this way, targeted architecture and interior design ensure flexible freedom of action and efficient work. This concept is represented by the term Healing Architecture described.
